Veneers: When Do They Need to Be Replaced?

From severe discoloration to misalignment issues, veneers are able to address multiple things. While the restorations are designed to last several decades, they’ll still need replacement eventually. If you fail to switch them out as needed, your smile may begin to look less-than-stellar. Since many factors affect the lifespan of veneers, it’s a good idea to know which signs indicate your restorations are wearing out. Read on to find out what these signs are and learn tips to help preserve your stunning results for as long as possible.

Which Signs Indicate Your Veneers Are Wearing Out?

Most veneers last about ten years with proper care and maintenance. However, if you’re experiencing any of the following signs, it may be time for a replacement:

Noticeable Darkening

Dental cement is used to bond a veneer to the front of your teeth. Over time, this adhesive will naturally begin to darken. You may eventually be able to see this darkening through the veneer. Since there’s no way to restore its brightness, your only option is to recement the veneer onto your tooth.

Stains Aren’t Lifting

Overconsumption of highly pigmented foods and drinks can lead to staining on your veneers. Soda, red wine, coffee, and tea can cause your smile to become discolored. If you want to get rid of these stains, you may need to replace your veneers since they cannot be whitened.

Underlying Tooth is Decayed

Practicing good oral hygiene is essential to keep your underlying teeth in good health. If the tooth supporting the veneer is decayed, you’ll need to seek treatment immediately. Otherwise, the veneer can start to separate from the tooth it is attached to.

Veneers Were Improperly Applied

If your veneers weren’t applied properly, they’ll fall off easily. The only solution would be to go back to your dentist and have them reapplied. Proper installation includes removing some of your enamel and bonding the veneer to the tooth using a strong adhesive.

Tips to Prolong the Life of Your New Smile

Once you have a beautiful smile, you’re going to want to do what you can to keep it looking its very best. Here are some tips to help prolong the lifetime of your veneers:

  • Avoid using your teeth as tools. You could chip or crack a veneer if you use your teeth for anything other than chewing food.
  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco products. These poor habits can stain your teeth and wreak havoc on your oral health.
  • Limit your intake of dark-colored foods and drinks. Red sauce, soda, coffee, tea, berries, curry, and wine can all stain your teeth.
  • Visit your dentist regularly. By having a checkup and cleaning every six months, you can ensure your veneers stay in good condition.
  • Practice good oral hygiene. Make sure you’re brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and rinsing every day with an ADA-approved mouthwash.
  • Wear a mouthguard. The custom-made oral device can prevent the erosion of porcelain in your veneers, keeping them in great shape for much longer.

Have you noticed any of the signs listed above? Contact your cosmetic dentist in Lady Lake and ask about veneer replacement. They’ll have your smile looking bright and healthy again in no time!
